A CT Coronary Angiogram (CTCA) is a non-invasive heart scan that uses CT technology and contrast dye to produce detailed images of the coronary arteries. It helps detect narrowing, blockages, or early signs of coronary artery disease. At Advicon Imaging, CTCA is bulk-billed for Medicare-eligible patients unless specific protocols require additional fees, which will always be discussed with you beforehand.

A CT Coronary Angiogram (CTCA) is a specialised cardiac CT scan used to examine the coronary arteries—the vessels that supply blood to the heart muscle. This test is commonly performed when patients experience chest discomfort, shortness of breath, or have risk factors for heart disease. CTCA can detect plaque buildup, narrowing, congenital abnormalities, and other vascular changes long before they cause symptoms.
Unlike a traditional angiogram, CTCA is non-invasive and does not require threading a catheter into the arteries. Instead, the test uses a fast CT scanner combined with intravenous contrast dye to clearly outline the coronary arteries. Medications may be given before the scan to slow the heart rate, allowing for clearer images. Nitroglycerin spray may also be used shortly before the scan to widen the coronary arteries for better visualisation.
During the scan, ECG patches are placed on your chest so the CT images can be timed precisely with your heartbeat. This ensures sharp, motion-free images of the coronary arteries. CTCA is highly sensitive for detecting early coronary artery disease and can guide your doctor in determining the best prevention or treatment strategies.
At Advicon Imaging, we use modern low-dose CT scanners to minimise radiation exposure while ensuring excellent image quality. Our team will guide you through the preparation, scanning, and recovery process, ensuring a comfortable and safe experience.

Your doctor may want to check for narrowed or blocked arteries, assess chest pain, investigate shortness of breath, or evaluate your risk of heart attack.
Yes.
ECG patches will be placed on your chest, and a cannula inserted into your arm. You may receive medication to slow your heart rate and nitroglycerin spray to widen the arteries. Contrast dye is then injected, and images are taken while you briefly hold your breath.
The scan is painless. You may feel warmth from the contrast or mild light-headedness from medications.
The full appointment can take 2–3 hours including preparation, although the scan itself takes only about 20 minutes.
Most patients tolerate it well. Rare reactions may occur. Please inform us if you have had previous contrast reactions or have kidney disease.
If you receive heart-rate–lowering medication or nitroglycerin, you may feel light-headed. Bringing someone to drive you home is recommended.
Results are typically available within 24–48 hours, with urgent findings prioritised.
