A CT Venogram is a specialised CT scan that uses contrast dye to create detailed images of your veins. It is commonly used to detect blood clots, venous blockages, and abnormalities in the brain, abdomen, pelvis, or limbs. At Advicon Imaging, Medicare-eligible CT Venograms are fully bulk-billed.

A CT Venogram (CTV) is a fast, non-invasive imaging test designed to assess the veins and identify conditions such as thrombosis (blood clots), venous obstruction, or abnormal vascular anatomy. It is especially useful in diagnosing cerebral venous thrombosis, deep venous thrombosis, pelvic vein congestion, and for mapping venous pathways prior to surgical or interventional procedures.
During the scan, an iodine-based contrast agent is injected through a vein in your arm. This highlights your venous system on the CT images, allowing radiologists to clearly visualise blood flow, blockages, collateral circulation, or anatomical variations. The scan provides wide anatomical coverage and can be combined with arterial-phase imaging if both arteries and veins need assessment.
CT Venography is highly accurate, fast, and a preferred alternative when ultrasound is inconclusive or when deeper veins require assessment. It is also an important tool for preoperative planning, as it helps surgeons understand venous structure and potential risks before intervention.
At Advicon Imaging, we use low-dose CT technology and modern protocols to produce high-quality venous imaging while minimising radiation exposure. All Medicare-eligible CT Venograms performed with a valid referral are bulk-billed.
It is a CT scan that uses injected contrast dye to create detailed images of your veins and detect blockages or clots.
Typical reasons include suspected blood clots, venous obstruction, pelvic congestion, abnormal swelling, headaches related to venous issues, or pre-surgical vein assessment.
Preparation may vary depending on the area being scanned.
A contrast injection is given through an IV in your arm. You will lie on a CT table while images are taken. The scan itself is quick, usually only a few minutes.
No. The scan is painless. You may feel a warm sensation or metallic taste during contrast injection—this is normal.
Most people tolerate it very well. Rare allergic reactions can occur. Please notify staff of any previous contrast issues.
Yes, the scan uses X-rays, but the dose is minimised using modern CT technology.
The scan itself takes 5–10 minutes. If contrast is used, your total visit may be around 20–30 minutes.
Yes. You can resume normal activities unless advised otherwise.
Reports are usually available within 24–48 hours, or sooner for urgent cases.
