A High-Resolution CT (HRCT) Chest scan uses very thin CT slices to create highly detailed images of the lungs. It is the preferred test for diagnosing and monitoring interstitial lung diseases and subtle abnormalities not seen on standard CT scans. At Advicon Imaging, HRCT Chest scans are bulk-billed for Medicare-eligible patients.

A High-Resolution CT (HRCT) Chest is an advanced form of CT scanning designed to show fine details of the lungs, airways, and surrounding tissues. Unlike a conventional CT chest scan, which uses thicker slices, HRCT uses very thin slices—typically between 0.625 mm and 1.25 mm—to capture precise, high‑detail images. This allows doctors to identify early or subtle lung changes that may not be visible on standard CT imaging.
HRCT is commonly requested to diagnose conditions such as interstitial lung disease, pulmonary fibrosis, sarcoidosis, asbestosis, emphysema, bronchiolitis, and other disorders affecting the lung tissue or small airways. It is also used to monitor disease progression or response to treatment. Because it captures fine anatomical detail, HRCT is especially helpful in detecting patterns such as ground‑glass opacities, nodules, septal thickening, and reticular changes.
During the scan, you will be asked to lie still on the CT table while images are taken. In some cases, images may be obtained during inhalation, exhalation, or in different positions (lying on your back or stomach) to better evaluate certain lung conditions. HRCT does not typically require contrast injection, making it a quick and comfortable test for most patients.
At Advicon Imaging, our HRCT studies are performed using modern CT technology designed to minimise radiation exposure while maintaining exceptional image quality. All Medicare‑eligible HRCT scans are fully bulk-billed.
An HRCT is a high‑detail CT scan that uses thin slices to create extremely clear images of the lungs and small airways.
HRCT is used to diagnose or monitor lung diseases such as pulmonary fibrosis, sarcoidosis, asbestosis, emphysema, bronchiolitis, or unexplained breathing problems.
HRCT usually requires no special preparation.
You will lie on a CT table while detailed images of your lungs are taken. You may be asked to hold your breath briefly or change positions during the scan.
No. HRCT is completely painless and non-invasive.
Yes, but the radiation dose is kept low using modern CT techniques tailored specifically for lung imaging.
The scan itself takes only a few minutes. The entire appointment typically lasts 10–15 minutes.
Most HRCT scans do not use contrast. If your doctor specifically requires a contrast-enhanced CT, we will advise you beforehand.
Yes. You can return to normal activities immediately.
Reports are usually sent to your doctor within 24–48 hours, or sooner if urgent.
Yes. HRCT Chest scans are bulk-billed for Medicare‑eligible patients at Advicon Imaging.
